This year marks a significant milestone for California wines as the California Wine Institute (CWI) celebrates the 50th anniversary of the historic 1976 Judgment of Paris, a blind tasting that forever changed perceptions of wine around the world.

To commemorate the occasion and showcase the excellence of California wines, a series of celebrations will be held across Asia, including Hong Kong, Shanghai, Beijing, Taipei, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, and Macau.

Back in 1976, British wine merchant Steven Spurrier organized a blind tasting in Paris that would go on to make wine history.

In a surprising outcome, California Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon outperformed some of France’s most prestigious wines, challenging long-held assumptions about wine quality and prestige.

According to Christopher Beros, Director for Greater China and Southeast Asia, 2026 represents a significant milestone for California's wine industry.

While the 50th anniversary of the Judgment of Paris is an opportunity to reflect on a historic achievement, it also highlights California's continued commitment to producing high-quality wines while embracing innovation and sustainability.

He noted that the pioneering mindset that helped California wines gain international recognition five decades ago remains deeply rooted in the industry today. 

From exploring new winemaking approaches to leading sustainability initiatives, California winemakers continue to push boundaries while staying true to the spirit that first captured the world's attention in 1976.

The celebration took place at Pool House @ Grand Hyatt Kuala Lumpur on 19 June 2026, bringing together more than 60 guests from the wine trade and media industry.
The evening offered a fascinating look back at one of the most influential moments in wine history, beginning with a special documentary screening that revisited the story and impact of the Judgment of Paris.

One of the highlights of the event was the opportunity to sample wines from wineries that took part in the historic tasting 50 years ago, alongside a carefully selected collection of wines that reflect the diversity and evolution of California's wine scene today. 

Guests were also treated to wines from the two wineries that achieved the highest scores at the original Judgment of Paris tasting, Chateau Montelena for Chardonnay and Stag's Leap Wine Cellars for Cabernet Sauvignon.

Beyond these iconic labels, the tasting featured a range of wines that showcased California's rich winemaking heritage. 

From elegant Pinot Noir to Zinfandel, often regarded as California's signature grape variety, the selection highlighted the unique characteristics of different wine-growing regions, including Napa Valley, Sonoma Coast, Lodi, and several others.

One of the best parts was seeing so many familiar faces again and catching up with people I hadn't seen in a while. It was wonderful to know that everyone is doing well.
What I love most about events like this is the opportunity to connect with people who share the same passion, whether it's wine, food, or simply good conversations. 
And honestly, good wine always tastes even better when enjoyed with good company.
