2 Weeks in the UK @ Entering the Beauty of Lake District

After exploring cities filled with history, beautiful architecture, and charming old streets, our UK journey was finally taking us somewhere completely different, the peaceful and breathtaking Lake District.
This was actually the only nature-focused destination in our entire UK itinerary.
Most of our previous stops were about exploring cities, historical landmarks, and villages, so I was really looking forward to slowing down, enjoying the scenery, and experiencing a different side of England.
From York and Leeds, we left the busy city atmosphere behind and started driving towards the countryside.
The roads became quieter, the views became wider, and slowly, the scenery changed from buildings and streets to mountains, lakes, and endless greenery.
I have always heard so much about the beauty of Lake District, and many people told me that it is one of the must-visit places in the UK.
So including this destination in our family road trip was something I really wanted to do, not just for myself, but also for my parents to experience the peaceful beauty of England’s nature.
This chapter will be about our Lake District journey; the scenic drives, beautiful viewpoints, charming villages, and the moments where we simply stopped, looked around, and appreciated how beautiful nature can be.
So let’s continue our UK road trip and explore the place where England’s landscapes truly shine.

Where to Stay in Lake District

Before sharing our Lake District adventure, let me first talk about where we stayed.
Finding accommodation in the Lake District was honestly not easy, especially when travelling as a group of seven.
The area is very popular, and accommodations around the lakes can be quite expensive, especially during peak travel periods.
Luckily, we managed to find this unit in Bowness-on-Windermere, and we felt that it was a really good choice for our trip.
The location was definitely the biggest advantage. It was located just opposite the lake, where we could easily walk over to see the beautiful views, watch the boats and yachts passing by, and enjoy the relaxing atmosphere of Lake Windermere.
The area was also quite lively, with restaurants, shops, and small streets nearby, making it very convenient for us.
Most importantly, it was able to accommodate all seven of us while still staying within our budget. When travelling with a bigger group, finding a place that balances location, comfort, and price is not always easy.
So when we found this place, we immediately felt it was a good deal.
Looking back, choosing to stay in Bowness-on-Windermere was definitely the right decision.
Not only did it make exploring Lake District much easier, but we also got to experience the charm of staying right beside one of England’s most beautiful lakes.

The accommodation itself was a triple-storey unit, and the layout was actually quite suitable for our group of seven.
On the ground floor, there was one smaller bedroom along with a small toilet.
Moving up to the first floor, we had the common area, which included the kitchen and living room.
This became the main gathering space for us, a place where everyone could relax, chat, and spend time together after a full day of exploring.
The second floor was where the remaining bedrooms were located.
There were three bedrooms in total on this level, including a master bedroom with its own attached bathroom, while the other two rooms shared a bathroom located outside.
Overall, the space was much bigger than we expected.
For seven people travelling together, having enough bedrooms and bathrooms made a huge difference. Everyone had their own space, while still having a comfortable common area where we could gather together.
Compared to some of the smaller accommodations we stayed in during this UK road trip, this unit definitely felt more spacious and comfortable.
Considering the location, the size, and the number of people it could accommodate, we felt it was a really good choice for our Lake District stay.

Great dinner prepared on our first night at Lake District. :)

The next morning, we started our day early with a walk around Bowness-on-Windermere.
Since it was still early, the town was peaceful and much quieter compared to the lively atmosphere we saw later in the day.
The streets were not crowded yet, and we could slowly walk around while enjoying the calm morning vibes.
There was something really relaxing about being beside the lake in the morning.
The fresh air, gentle breeze, and quiet surroundings made it feel like the perfect start to our Lake District adventure.
We could see the boats and yachts resting on the water, while visitors slowly started arriving to enjoy the beautiful scenery.
Bowness-on-Windermere has a very charming lakeside town feeling.
The streets are filled with small shops, cafés, and restaurants, but in the early morning, everything felt slower and more peaceful.
It was nice to take our time, walk without rushing, and simply enjoy the beauty around us.
Sometimes, the best way to experience a place is not by rushing from one attraction to another, but by taking a quiet morning walk and appreciating the little moments.

One of the cutest things we noticed during our morning walk was the number of ducks and geese around the lake.
They were everywhere; swimming peacefully on the water, walking around the lakeside, and enjoying their morning just like the visitors.
What made it even more interesting was how close we could get to them.
They seemed so comfortable around people and were not afraid at all, making it a fun experience, especially when travelling with family.
Watching them slowly move around the lake, with the beautiful scenery of Windermere as the backdrop, added such a peaceful and natural feeling to the morning.
It was such a simple moment, but it made the place feel even more alive.

Coming from a city environment, being able to walk beside a lake, surrounded by nature and these little creatures, felt like a refreshing change. It reminded us to slow down and enjoy the small details that make a destination special.

Of course, we couldn’t leave without taking some family photos by the lake.
One thing I really appreciate about travelling with my family is how easy-going everyone is.
They are not the type who are particular about every little detail or complain when plans change. Whether it’s waking up early, walking around for hours, changing the itinerary, or trying new places, everyone is always willing to follow along and enjoy the experience.
Travelling with seven people is not always easy, especially when everyone has different preferences and energy levels.
But I feel very lucky that my family is so cooperative and flexible.
Everyone plays their own part, helps each other, and most importantly, focuses on enjoying the journey together.
These family photos are not just about capturing the beautiful scenery behind us; they are reminders of the precious time we spent together.
Moments like standing beside Lake Windermere, enjoying the fresh air and beautiful views, are memories that I will always treasure.
I truly believe the best part of travelling is not only the places we visit, but the people we share those moments with.

After enjoying our morning walk around Bowness-on-Windermere, we drove about 30 minutes to Grasmere to try one of the most famous local treats in the Lake District, Grasmere Gingerbread.
I had seen many people recommending it online, so of course, we had to make a stop to try it ourselves.
The shop itself is small and charming, but it has become such a popular spot that many visitors make a special trip here just for the gingerbread.
The taste was quite unique compared to the usual gingerbread cookies I’ve tried before.
It had a lovely combination of sweetness, buttery richness, and a gentle spicy kick from the ginger.
The texture was also interesting, slightly crumbly like a biscuit, but with a soft and rich flavour that melts in your mouth.
I’m usually not a big fan of overly sweet snacks, but this one was actually quite enjoyable.
The ginger flavour gave it a nice warmth and made it feel different from regular biscuits.
Was it worth the drive? I would say yes, especially when you’re already exploring the beautiful villages around the Lake District.
Sometimes trying a famous local food is part of experiencing the destination itself.

After getting our Grasmere Gingerbread, we took a short walk around the village to enjoy the surroundings.
Grasmere is exactly the kind of place I imagined when people described the Lake District, peaceful, green, and surrounded by beautiful nature.
The village is small and charming, with traditional stone houses, quiet roads, and mountains in the background creating such a beautiful backdrop.

What I loved most was the relaxing atmosphere.
Everything felt slower here. There were no busy city crowds, no rushing from one place to another; just fresh air, greenery everywhere, and the peaceful sounds of nature.
Walking around Grasmere felt like a little escape from the busy world.
The combination of the beautiful landscape, cosy village atmosphere, and calm surroundings made it such an enjoyable stop during our Lake District journey.
Sometimes, places don’t need many attractions to impress you.
A beautiful view, a quiet walk, and a peaceful moment are already enough to make a place memorable.

After exploring Grasmere, we realized that there wasn’t really anything too fancy for lunch around the village.
At the same time, we suddenly remembered that we still hadn’t tried one of the most iconic British dishes yet, fish and chips!
Coincidentally, we found out that there was a fish and chips shop near our Airbnb in Bowness-on-Windermere, and the price was also quite reasonable.
Without thinking too much, we decided to drive back and finally have our first fish and chips experience in the UK.
Everyone ordered their own portion, and of course, we couldn’t miss having some beers to go along with it.
Sitting together, enjoying our meal after a morning of exploring, was such a relaxing moment.
The fish and chips were actually better than I expected.
The fish was crispy on the outside while still soft and flaky inside. The batter was light and crunchy, and it paired really well with the tender fish.
The chips were thick-cut, filling, and had that comforting homemade feel.
The portion was also surprisingly generous.
For a group of hungry travelers after walking around the Lake District, it was definitely satisfying and enough to keep everyone full.
Sometimes the best meals during travelling are not always the ones we carefully plan.
This simple fish and chips lunch, together with good food, drinks, and family company, became one of those enjoyable little moments that made the trip even more memorable.

After lunch, everyone was feeling quite tired, especially after a morning of walking around and exploring.
With the warm weather that day, my parents decided to head back to the Airbnb to have a good rest.
Honestly, I was quite happy that everyone listened to their own body and didn’t force themselves to continue.
When travelling with elderly parents, it’s important to balance the itinerary and make sure everyone is comfortable.
While the rest of the family went back to recharge, me and Lik decided to continue with our original plan and explore one more place, White Moss Walks.

Since we were already in the Lake District, I really wanted to experience more of its natural beauty.
This was exactly the reason we came here. to slow down, walk among nature, and enjoy the peaceful landscapes that make the Lake District so special.
So while everyone took a well-deserved break, we continued our little adventure and headed towards White Moss, ready to discover another beautiful corner of this stunning region.

White Moss Walks turned out to be exactly the kind of nature experience I was hoping for in the Lake District.
The walk required quite a bit of walking, but every step was worth it.
Along the way, we passed through beautiful natural scenery; crossing small bridges, walking beside flowing rivers, and surrounded by hills and mountains covered in endless greenery.

What made the experience even more special was how peaceful it was during our visit.
Since we came later in the afternoon, the area was already much quieter.
We hardly saw other people around, and at some points, it felt like we had the whole place to ourselves.

There was something magical about walking through such a vast green landscape with almost no noise around us.
No traffic, no crowds, just the sound of the river flowing, the wind moving through the trees, and the peaceful feeling of being surrounded by nature.
The Lake District is truly a place where you don’t need to rush.
It’s about slowing down, taking a deep breath, and allowing yourself to appreciate the beauty around you.

We stopped several times along the way, not because we were tired, but simply because the views were too beautiful not to pause and enjoy.
Standing there, surrounded by so much greenery and tranquillity, I finally understood why so many people fall in love with this place.

Along the way, we drove beside the lake, back towards Moses and Bowness-on-Windermere, the scenery was simply breathtaking.
The water was calm and peaceful, reflecting the beautiful surroundings, while the hills and trees created such a relaxing backdrop.
It was one of those drives where you don’t feel like rushing to reach your destination because the journey itself is already part of the experience.
I found myself constantly looking out of the window, enjoying the changing scenery.
The quiet roads, fresh air, and beautiful lakeside views made this drive feel almost therapeutic.
Sometimes during a road trip, the most memorable moments are not always the planned stops, they are the unexpected beautiful views you discover along the way.
This drive back to Bowness-on-Windermere was definitely one of those moments.

After dinner, we took advantage of one of the biggest benefits of staying at our Airbnb, its amazing location.
Since it was just a short walk away from the lake, we decided to head out after dinner and enjoy the evening by Lake Windermere
Watching the sunset by the water was such a beautiful and peaceful moment.
The whole atmosphere was incredibly relaxing.
The lake was quiet, the surroundings were calm, and the evening breeze made it the perfect time to slow down after a full day of exploring.

It was also a lovely moment spent with Lik, my sister, and my two nieces.
We didn’t have any special plans; we simply walked, chatted, enjoyed the view, and laughed together. Sometimes, these simple moments are the ones that become the best memories.
Standing by the lake, surrounded by beautiful scenery and good company, made me feel so grateful. After a long day of travelling, this quiet evening was exactly what we needed, peaceful, relaxing, and filled with happiness.
This is also why I always appreciate staying somewhere with a good location.
Being able to simply walk out after dinner and enjoy a beautiful view without needing to drive anywhere is such a wonderful part of the travel experience.

While walking along the lake, we also spotted a little corner that looked familiar.
Apparently, this was one of the spots where Taylor Swift had taken photos before, and of course, we couldn’t resist stopping by to capture our own version too.

The next morning, before leaving the Lake District and continuing our road trip towards Edinburgh, we made a few stops along the way.
Our first stop was The World of Beatrix Potter Attraction, featuring Peter Rabbit and his friends, a place that many people recommend when visiting Bowness-on-Windermere.
Since Peter Rabbit is such a beloved character, I was curious to take a look.
The shop was filled with all kinds of cute Peter Rabbit souvenirs, from toys and decorations to little gifts that are perfect for bringing home.
Of course, I couldn’t resist bringing something back, a cute little Peter Rabbit souvenir.
I have to admit, it was not cheap, but sometimes when travelling, I don’t mind spending a little more on something meaningful.
For me, it wasn’t just about buying a toy.
It became a little reminder of my time in Windermere, the beautiful lake views, peaceful walks, and the wonderful memories created with my family during this trip.
Some souvenirs are not about the price; they are about the story behind them.
Every time I look at this little rabbit in the future, I know it will bring me back to the beautiful moments we had in the Lake District.

After visiting Peter Rabbit and his friends, we continued our drive towards Edinburgh and made another stop near Keswick, at the beautiful Derwentwater.
This was another one of those unexpected scenic stops that reminded us why the Lake District is so special.
The lake was incredibly peaceful, surrounded by mountains, greenery, and beautiful countryside views. There were boats gently moving across the water, adding even more charm to the already postcard-like scenery.

Photo credit goes to my dad. No matter where we travel, he is always the one patiently helping me take photos.
Some of my favourite travel pictures over the years have been taken by him, and that makes them even more meaningful to me.

We didn’t spend too long here, but even a short stop was enough to appreciate the beauty of the place. Standing by the lake, looking at the calm water with the mountains as the backdrop, it felt so relaxing and refreshing.
The atmosphere was completely different from the busy towns we had visited earlier.

Everything felt slower here; people were simply enjoying the views, taking walks, sitting by the lake, or waiting for the boat rides.

Before continuing our journey north, we also made a quick stop in Keswick.
We didn’t have much time here, so we simply wandered around the town centre and enjoyed the atmosphere.
Keswick felt like a charming little town, surrounded by beautiful scenery and mountains.
It was lively without feeling overcrowded, and there was a relaxed pace of life that we had come to appreciate throughout the Lake District.
For lunch, we stopped at a small local café.
Sometimes these little cafés turn out to be the most memorable, and this was one of them.
The owner was incredibly friendly and welcoming, making us feel right at home.
Since all seven of us were travelling together, we wanted a family photo, and the café owner kindly helped us take one.
It's a small gesture, but moments like these always stay with me.
When you're travelling, it's not only the places that make a trip special, but also the kindness of the people you meet along the way.
With full stomachs, a new family photo added to our collection, and plenty of wonderful memories from the Lake District, it was finally time to continue our road trip towards Edinburgh.

And just like that, our Lake District chapter came to an end.
Out of all the places we visited during this UK road trip, Lake District was probably the one that allowed us to slow down the most.
There were no packed schedules, no rushing from one attraction to another, just beautiful lakes, peaceful walks, charming villages, and quality time with family.
What I will remember most is not only the stunning scenery, but also the simple moments; feeding our eyes with endless greenery, enjoying fish and chips by the lake, watching the sunset at Windermere, taking family photos, and sharing laughs throughout the journey.
I can completely understand why so many people fall in love with Lake District.
It has a special kind of beauty that makes you want to pause, breathe, and simply enjoy the moment.
As we left the lakes and mountains behind, it was time for the next adventure.
Our road trip would now take us across the border into Scotland, where a completely different landscape and culture awaited us.
Next stop: Edinburgh, and stay tuned for Part 7 of our 2 Weeks in the UK journey.
