Hey there! Welcome back to my travel blog! Can you believe it’s already November? We’ve got less than two months left to say goodbye to 2024!
The fourth quarter is always a whirlwind for me because I love taking time off to travel.
At the end of October, I took a week off to visit Shenzhen with my family for a short getaway filled with food hunting and shopping. It was a fun trip, especially since I had the chance to show my parents around places I’m familiar with, and of course, treat them to some delicious food and great shopping. I think they really enjoyed the week and had a wonderful time.
Before I shared my Shenzhen trip, I thought it would be the perfect time to kick off my first post about my incredible 3-weeks New Zealand adventure from May. I’ve been promising to update you all on my New Zealand itinerary for months, and I’m finally ready to share it with you!
We spent 15 unforgettable days traveling New Zealand's South Island in a campervan, starting in Queenstown and ending in Christchurch. Along the way, we discovered towering mountaions, peaceful lakes and charming towns, each stop prividing its own distint experiences. Afterward, we spent 4 days in Christchurch, exploring the city and its surroundings by car. And finally, we flew to Auckland to begin our North Island adventure, discovced its cultural sites and unique experiences.
For me, this journey was about fulfilling a dream: taking my parents to New Zealand. While they’ve traveled to many places in Europe, the U.S., China and Australia, New Zealand was the one major destination they hadn’t visited, so checking this off my bucket list was truly a special moment.
Of course, the trip wasn’t without its challenges. Traveling with my parents, both of whom are 80 years old and hadn’t traveled in over 4 years, required a lot of planning. A long journey could be tough for them, and driving around in a campervan added some extra challenges. Still, we were excited to make this dream trip a reality.
The month we spent together created memories I’ll always treasure. It was a blessing to see my parents enjoying the breathtaking sights of New Zealand, and I feel so fortunate to have shared those special moments with them. This adventure not only brought us closer but also gave us memories that will last a lifetime.
I’ll be sharing the itinerary in four parts, each highlighting the key destinations and memorable experiences along the way. Be sure to stay tuned for all the details about our campervan adventure!
From Melbourne to Queenstown
Traveling from Kuala Lumpur to Melbourne typically takes about 11 hours on a direct flight.
Since this was my parents' first flight after a 3 year break due to the MCO, we decided it would be nice to include a one-week stopover in Melbourne for a relaxing getaway.
This also gave us the opportunity to attend Lik’s cousin’s wedding, which added a special touch to our trip. If you’re interested, you can check out my detailed Melbourne trip recap at HERE.
So after our time in Melbourne, we flew from there to Queenstown, which is just over a three-hour flight with Jetstar. The ticket cost was AUD 272 per person, about RM 820, which included all fees.

The flight from Melbourne to Queenstown was quick and comfortable, and the view from the plane as we flew into New Zealand was honestly one of the best I’ve ever seen, such stunning scenery!
MAUI Motorhomes/Campervans
It has always been on my and Lik's to-do list to experience a campervan adventure in New Zealand, especially knowing that it’s one of the safest countries for such travel.
Initially, we were concerned about whether our parents would be comfortable in a campervan, leading us to consider skipping the idea this time around. To our surprise, my parents said yes! They thought that a campervan would be convenient, especially since they could stop for the bathroom anytime during long drives.
I also asked some friends who have traveled in campervans, and they all encouraged us to give it a try. After thinking it over, we decided to go for it!
We are traveling with five people, so we had to book the largest campervan that can fit six passengers.
One of my friends suggested that a bigger vehicle would be more comfortable and provide more space to move around. Honestly, having five people in a six-person campervan isn't very convenient or comfortable. I think a six-seater would be perfect if you’re traveling with just four people.

We spent quite a bit of time researching different rental companies and ultimately decided on MAUI Motorhomes. Two of my friends had rented from them before and highly recommended the company, and after checking online reviews, they seemed like a reliable choice. While some third-party websites offered better rates, we chose to go directly with Maui, which turned out to be a great decision, especially after the car rental issues we had experienced in Melbourne.
How Much We Paid for MAUI 6 Berth River Elite
We paid a total of NZD 4,746.03, about RM 12,400, for the 6-Berth River Elite campervan, which included a discount for every 7th day of rental. A friend of mine recommended opting for full insurance coverage to avoid any issues when returning the vehicle, and I’m really glad we did, it gave us peace of mind throughout the trip.
But one important thing to keep in mind is to take photos or videos of the vehicle when you pick it up, especially of any existing damage. That way, if there’s any issue when you return it, you have proof to avoid being charged for something that wasn’t your fault. Just like in our case, we were lucky to have video proof of the existing damage on the outside of the car, which came in handy when we returned it.
The total cost also covered the insurance, an extra gas bottle, and included four sets of outdoor chairs and a table for free. My personal advice is that you don’t need to buy an extra gas bottle if you plan to stay at the Top 10 campsites, as they provide public kitchens for cooking. However, if you’re planning to use non-paid campsites, it probably a good idea to bring an extra gas bottle just in case.
This is what the interior looks like.
You can check their website for all the details on what’s included in the vehicle.
For six people, the sleeping arrangements are as follows: there’s one double bed over the cab, located above the vehicle and accessed by stairs. Though this bed is comfortable, it may not be ideal for older people and can be inconvenient if you need to use the bathroom at midnight. There’s also one double bed that converts from the front dining area, where you fold down the table to make the bed. It’s stated to fit two people, but honestly, I think it’s too small and not very comfortable even for one adult. Finally, there’s another double bed that converts from the rear dining area at the back of the campervan. This last option is the most comfortable for sleeping compared to the others.

That probably explains why I said the 6-berth van is more practical for 4 people, even though it’s stated to fit 6. I found it inconvenient to keep folding the dining area back and forth, and the sleeping area wasn’t very comfortable either.
The campervan is fully equipped with all the essentials to make life on the road comfortable and convenient. Inside, you'll find everything you need to prepare and enjoy meals, including plates, bowls, forks, spoons, and a selection of pots and pans for cooking. There’s a microwave for quick reheats and a stove for more elaborate meals, offering plenty of options whether you’re making a simple breakfast or a hearty dinner. The campervan also provides cutting boards, kitchen knives, a kettle, and other utensils, so you can easily chop, cook, and enjoy your favorite meals no matter where you are. It’s the perfect setup for anyone looking to eat well and feel at home while traveling.
I think the bathroom (or toilet) is one of the biggest concerns for most people when it comes to a campervan trip. No doubt, it’s not easy to shower or even use the toilet because the space is really small. We ended up using it only for the toilet, but not for showering, since we stayed at paid campsites, especially the Top 10 Holiday Parks, which offer much better public shower facilities.
What Kind of Luggage to Bring for Campervan
One important thing to consider is what kind of luggage to bring on the campervan trip since there isn’t much room for large suitcases. I’m lucky that I seek advice from a friend about packing before our trip, as I tend to be a heavy traveler who brings a lot of clothes for my OOTD postings. This campervan adventure was definitely a packing challenge for me.
My advice is to avoid hard suitcases! There’s no extra space for big and hard suitcases, and you’ll have to carry it up and down from your bed every day if you do. Instead, opt for foldable and flexible luggage that can be easily stored. For our trip, we bought large foldable suitcases from Shopee, which worked perfectly. We also used vacuum bags to compress our clothes, making it easier to fit everything we needed for our 1 month holiday.
So, with the available cabinets inside the campervan, we carefully organized our outfits into the cabinets. Well I can’t say the cabinets provided enough space for all five of us, we really made an effort to maximize every inch of available storage in the vehicle.

That said, it wasn’t as easy for my parents. They did try staying a night in the campervan, but by the next day, they were ready for something more comfortable. They asked if we could book them a proper room, and I completely understood. So, after the first two nights in the van, I arranged accommodations for them at either a TOP 10 Holiday Park or an Airbnb, where they could enjoy a bit more space and comfort. I will include each of the TOP 10 Holiday Park rooms and Airbnb listings for each day we stay in my following post.
All in all, if you asked me again, I’d still choose the adventure in a campervan without hesitation. Honestly, as someone who doesn’t exactly travel light; I’m the kind of person who always ends up packing way more than I need, with extra shoes, gadgets, and ‘just-in-case’ clothes, taking on a campervan road trip seemed like a huge challenge at first. I was honestly a bit nervous about how I’d manage with such limited space and the whole 'roughing it' aspect, especially because I’m used to having more comfort and flexibility when I travel. The idea of spending days in a tiny van with limited privacy and having to make do with whatever I could fit into a small space was intimidating. But, surprisingly, once I settled in, it turned out to be one of the most memorable and rewarding travel experiences I’ve ever had. The freedom of just waking up and being able to drive to a new destination whenever I wanted, without worrying about hotel bookings or long commutes, was incredibly freeing. Sure, there were moments when I missed the usual comforts of a hotel, like a soft bed or a proper bathroom, but the simplicity of it all made me appreciate the small things in a way I hadn’t expected. Now, looking back, I can’t believe I actually managed to make it all the way through and ended up loving the experience. It really changed my perspective on travel, and I’d even go as far as to say that I’d love to do it again. In fact, I told Lik that we should definitely plan another campervan road trip sometime in the future, maybe in a completely different part of the world, somewhere with even more stunning landscapes and hidden gems to explore. The idea of waking up in a new place every day, with the open road ahead of us, sounds like the perfect kind of adventure to me now.
Day 1: Melbourne - Queenstown
We arrived in Queenstown very early in the morning, and it was so convenient that Maui Motorhomes had arranged for us to pick up the campervan directly from the airport. All we had to do was make a quick free local call, and they came to pick us up, simple and efficient.
Unfortunately, the weather didn’t cooperate on our first day. It was pouring rain by the time we picked up the campervan, which made things a little less pleasant. Despite the weather, we rushed to the nearest supermarket, Pak'n Save, to stock up on groceries. Afterward, we had a simple lunch inside the campervan, trying to stay dry and warm. I find that Pak'n Save offers the best prices and the widest selection for groceries in New Zealand, and so it became our go-to store throughout the trip.
Do keep in mind that it’s always a good idea to stock up on groceries in the larger cities, as small towns often have higher prices due to less competition. The variety and cost-effectiveness in bigger cities are usually much better, so it’s worth planning ahead and buying what you need before heading to more remote areas.
For our first night, we had booked a powered site at the Queenstown Top 10 Holiday Park. However, the first night wasn’t exactly smooth sailing as we were all trying to accommodate ourselves, especially figuring out how to fit everything in the campervan. I think my parents had a bit of a culture shock, adjusting to the shared bathroom facilities and the less-than-comfortable beds inside the van. It was a bit of a rough start, but we did our best to adapt to it. :)
Day 2: Queenstown - Te Anau
The Top 10 Holiday Park provided a convenient shuttle service that took us to downtown Queenstown for free, which was a great perk. We spent the morning exploring the town, making sure to stop for lunch at the famous Fergburger, a must-try for anyone visiting Queenstown!
Queenstown truly exceeded my expectations with its breathtaking beauty. When I first thought about it, I pictured it mostly as a destination for adrenaline-pumping outdoor activities like jet boating, rafting, ziplining, parachuting, and paragliding. But honestly, as soon as I reached there, I quickly realized there's so much more to Queenstown than just the thrill-seeking adventures. The town is stunning, with a vibe that's completely different from what I imagined.
One of the biggest surprises for me was the Queenstown Waterfront. It completely blew me away. It’s such a charming and peaceful spot, perfect for a relaxing stroll or just sitting by the water and taking it all in. The atmosphere is so vibrant yet laid-back, and you can’t help but feel at ease as you enjoy the incredible views. Whether you're people-watching or just soaking up the scenery, it’s a place that really invites you to slow down and appreciate the surroundings.
Here. you can see the TSS Earnslaw, one of the world's oldest and largest coal-fired steamships, which has been sailing on lake Wakatipu in Queesntown since 1912. It is said that the ship is the last of many coal-burning steamers that once carried people and goods to remote areas around the lake, starting in 1863.
Too bad we didn’t stay until sunset, as I think the waterfront would have become even more peaceful, with the soft golden light shining on the lake and mountains, creating a calm and beautiful scene.
The downtown of Queenstown isn’t very large, but it’s incredibly beautiful. After visiting the waterfront, we walked along the shore, and the water was astonishingly clean. It’s a great spot to relax, enjoy the beautiful weather, and take in the stunning views. Surprisingly, it wasn’t overcrowded either.
I saw a lot of ducks with dark plumage there. They seemed so carefree, gliding around in the peaceful surroundings. I envy their simple, carefree life. :)
We headed to Fergburger before noon to avoid the crowds, as I had read online that this popular spot is often packed with long lines. To make sure we didn’t waste time waiting, we decided to get an early lunch, especially since we had already booked the shuttle for 1 pm.
It wasn’t very crowded, and the line was short, but there weren’t many available seats, and the kitchen was still quite busy preparing food. Despite that, we only had to wait about 30 minutes, which I thought was bearable.
Finally, the Fergburger is in my hands! 我终于吃到传说中非常好吃一定要吃的大汉堡啦!
The burger is absolutely massive, way too big for me to finish in one sitting. But, since I wasn’t sure when I’d be back, I decided to go all in and order one for each of us. And I’m so glad I did!
There’s no doubt that Fergburger lives up to its reputation. The flavor is incredible, especially the meat, which is cooked to perfection. It’s juicy, tender, and full of flavor, making every bite a real treat. The bun was soft yet sturdy enough to hold everything together, and the toppings were fresh and well-balanced. Whether you go for a classic Fergburger or one of their more adventurous options, the quality of the ingredients is clear.
If you’re in Queenstown, this is a must-try. Even if you can’t finish it all, the experience of eating such a delicious, oversized burger is definitely worth it.
Thank you, Queenstown, for everything. You’ve truly won me over, and now I can’t wait to come back again.
After spending a few hours exploring and enjoying Queenstown at our own pace, we hit the road again, driving about 2.5 hours to Te Anau.
We arrived late in the afternoon, drove around using Waze, and found a hidden spot to visit, a mirror lake near the Te Anau TOP 10 Holiday Park.
I can't remember the name of the lake, but if you know it, please leave the name in the comments below. :)
After we parked the car, we walked into the park surrounded by tall trees. At first, we thought there was no lake, as we couldn’t find anything after walking for about five minutes. But we didn’t give up and kept going, and eventually, we stumbled upon the lake at the end of the path. It was so quiet, with no one else around, just us. I could hear the soft sounds of the water, and it felt like we had discovered a hidden gem.
I can't describe the feeling when I’m standing in front of this beautiful lake, it makes me feel so peaceful. Looking back now, I’d say this is the most beautiful mirror lake I’ve seen in New Zealand. The peacefulness and the perfectly clear reflection are vivid in my mind, even now when I think back.
We called it a day after settling into our accommodation and preparing a simple dinner at the Te Anau Top 10 Holiday Park.
You’re probably wondering why we’re heading to Top 10 Holiday Park again instead of trying other campsite options. The reason is that I’ve actually signed up for their membership and paid the fee, which gives us a 10% discount every time we visit. We’ve found that Top 10 Holiday Park offers the safest and most comfortable experience, so it’s become our go-to choice. Plus, the membership perks make it even more worthwhile!
Day 3 - Te Anau - Milford Sound - Te Anau
We started our day early, knowing we had a 2-hour plus drive ahead of us from Te Anau Top 10 Holiday Park to Milford Sound. Since we had booked the 11am Milford cruise, we decided not to make stops along the way to ensure we didn’t risk being late and losing our tickets.
I read online that parking at Milford is NZD $10 per hour, and we thought it was very expensive. We estimated it would cost around NZD $30–$40 by the time we finished the cruise, so we decided to park outside Milford, where parking is free. However, looking back, I think we should have just paid for the parking, even though it was expensive, because the walk from the free parking area to Milford takes about 30 minutes, which wasn't easy for my parents. Also, the route isn't flat, which might be difficult for older people.
Milford Sound wasn’t part of our original plan, as it requires at least two extra days to visit. It's located in a different direction, and you really need at least two days to drive there and back. However, after reading numerous reviews and receiving recommendations from friends, we decided to skip Dunedin and Glenorchy from our itinerary and opt for the Milford Sound instead.
I booked the Milford Sound Cruise through Klook after comparing prices on several websites. We found that Klook offered the best rate, and their cancellation policy, which allows changes up to 24 hours before the trip, was really convenient. Since we were on a road trip, our plans were flexible, and the destination could change at any time. Luckily, we had purchased our tickets through Klook, as we changed our plans at the last minute. We decided to visit Milford just one day before our scheduled departure, so the ability to cancel at the last minute gave us the flexibility we needed and allowed us to adjust to our new itinerary.
The Milford Sound Cruise itself was a memorable experience. The scenery was absolutely stunning, with towering cliffs and lush forests surrounding the fjord. However, it was a bit of a shame that it didn’t rain, as the waterfalls would have been even more spectacular with the added flow. Still, the beauty of Milford Sound was undeniable, and we thoroughly enjoyed the peaceful cruise.
The wind was so strong that it almost blew us away.
I think this is the first time in my life that I've actually wished for rain during my travels. #lol We were really hoping for rain and even prepared rain coasts during our Milford Sound cruise, as we knew it would bring the waterfalls to life. The rain makes the waterfalls even more spectacular, with dozens of temporary falls cascading down the cliffs, creating a truly magical sight. It was something we were looking forward to experiencing, as the rain would add an extra layer of beauty to the already stunning landscape.
Since there was no rain and the weather was clear with bright sunshine, the Stirling Falls didn't have the dramatic effect we were hoping for. Without the rain, the waterfalls were much smaller and less impressive, as many of the temporary falls that usually appear only during wet weather weren't flowing. As a result, the cruise felt a bit less exciting than we expected. The stunning scenery was still beautiful, but without the waterfalls in full force, it lacked the wow factor we had been looking forward to.
Next, we saw Bowen Falls, which is smaller than Stirling Falls but still a beautiful sight. It’s located near the entrance of Milford Sound, and its water cascades down from a height of over 160 meters. While it may not be as dramatic as Stirling Falls, its serene beauty and the surrounding landscape still make it a memorable stop on the cruise.
With my dad and mum <3
Milford Sound, located in Fiordland National Park, is a haven for wildlife. The Encounter Nature Cruise is a great way to get up close to the diverse wildlife in the area. We were lucky enough to spot seals lounging on the rocks during our trip.
Catch a view of Mitre Peak, one of the most famous sights in Milford Sound. The peak stands out with its sharp, pyramid shape, and it's pretty amazing to see up close.
Some people have asked me whether the Milford Sound Cruise is worth the long drive, considering it requires two days of travel back and forth. Honestly, it’s a bit difficult for me to give a definitive answer because I’ve been on quite a few cruises, both big and small, and for me, the Milford Sound Cruise didn’t feel particularly special. The experience wasn’t as spectacular as I had imagined. There were no rainy, dramatic skies, and we didn’t get to see the iconic, massive waterfalls that make Milford Sound famous. Without those elements, I didn’t feel that sense of awe I was expecting. While the scenery was still beautiful, I’d recommend visiting in the early morning, as I read in some reviews that the crowds are smaller then compared to the afternoon.
Look! That's the kiwi, one of New Zealand's most famous native animals and a national symbol. It's a small, flightless bird with a long beak and is usually active at night, but we were lucky to spot this little guy early in the morning at Milford Sound.
After the cruise, we made our way back to Te Anau, taking our time to stop at a few scenic spots along the way. The drive itself was breathtaking, with the Te Anau route offering some truly picturesque views. One of the highlights was passing through the Homer Tunnel, a key part of the road that connects Te Anau to Milford Sound. The tunnel cuts through the Darran Mountains, offering some stunning landscapes as you make your way toward Milford.
Another highlights was pulling over at one of those iconic spots in the middle of the road, where you can stand on the road and get that perfect shot with the sweeping mountains and wide-open skies. It was one of those moments where you feel like you’re truly in the heart of New Zealand’s natural beauty.
We passed by Lake Gunn, a peaceful spot in Fiordland National Park, known for its calm, mirror-like waters. It was very quiet here, unlike the more crowded areas, making it the perfect place to truly enjoy nature, surrounded by mountains and forests.
Mirror Lakes, just outside Te Anau, is a peaceful spot famous for its perfect reflections of the surrounding mountains and trees. On a clear day, the water is so still it looks like a mirror. We took a quick, easy walk through the forest to get there, and it was so quiet that we could really soak in the natural sounds and snap some photos of the stunning scenery.
The drive didn’t feel long at all with so many beautiful sights along the way. After over two hours, we finally made it back to Te Anau. We had originally planned to stay at the Top 10 Holiday Park, but it was fully booked when we arrived. So, we looked around and found the Te Anau Tasman Holiday Parks instead. I was so glad we found it as it turned out to be much nicer than the Top 10, and if I remember right, it was also a bit cheaper. I can't quite recall the exact price, but it was definitely a great find.
We booked their Matai Ensuite that includes a Queen and 3 Single beds, comfortably sleeping up to 5 people. It has a private bathroom, along with a fridge, electric kettle, and toaster. For added comfort, the unit also features a heater, hairdryer, and TV. All linens, bedding, and towels are provided, and there’s free Wi-Fi available.
You might be wondering why I booked a room for five people, especially since some of us could have stayed in the van. Well, the reason is simple: it was actually more cost-effective to book a larger room for everyone than to reserve a small room for two people and a separate powered site for the van. So, in some cases, it made more sense to choose room accommodation rather than spend the night in the van.
It's great that they offer an ultra-modern, fully equipped communal kitchen, dining room, lounge, and laundry facilities within the complex. All rooms have undercover access to these shared amenities.
There’s a supermarket just a 10-minute walk away, which was perfect for a nice evening stroll in the cool weather. We picked up some wine and beer, then cooked up a decent dinner to enjoy in their spacious and lovely dining room after a long day.
Day 4 - Te Anau - Queenstown
We made our way back to Queenstown, taking the same route we had come from. This time, however, we stopped at Lake Wakatipu.
Lake Wakatipu was actually on our list, but we almost missed it while we were on the road. Luckily, Lik took a quick look at the map and noticed there was a lake nearby. That’s when we realized we hadn’t planned to stop there yet, so we pulled over to check it out and ended up at Lake Wakatipu!
Lake Wakatipu is absolutely stunning, and what made it even better was that we had the place all to ourselves when we arrived, such a pleasant surprise! The water was crystal clear, reflecting the bright blue sky above. The trees surrounding the lake added to the beauty, their vibrant green leaves contrasting perfectly with the serene, peaceful setting. It felt like we had stumbled upon a hidden paradise.
真的美到像一幅画!
My dad enjoyed Lake Wakatipu a lot. He could hardly believe how clear the water was and was in awe of the beautiful scenery with the mountains in the background.
The best part about a road trip is that you can stop wherever you find something beautiful and just take it all in. No schedules, no rush. It’s all about enjoying the moment. This was our second stop before we reached Queenstown, and it was a perfect spot to stretch our legs and snap some photos.
South New Zealand is honestly beautiful around every corner, whether it’s the lakes, lush greenery, or those epic mountains. It’s just the kind of place where you can’t help but take it all in. And traveling in a campervan? It's such a chill way to do it. You can just kick back in the back, relax, and enjoy the views, of course, as long as you’ve got a good driver up front! It’s the perfect way to unwind while soaking in all that natural beauty.
Finally made it to Queenstown for lunch and a little shopping spree. I really love Queenstown, it’s one of those places where the mountain views just take your breath away every time you look up. It’s kind of overwhelming in the best way, like nature just hits you with its beauty. We popped into K-Mart for some shopping, and if you ever get a chance to go, definitely check it out. They always have some great discounts, and you can find some really good stuff for a steal!
On our 4th night, we decided to sleep in the campervan while we put our parents in a room at the Top 10 Holiday Park. So, it was around 9pm, and we were just chilling, talking and relaxing. Lik was scrolling through TikTok when he came across a video of someone who had actually seen the Southern Lights. Without giving it much thought, we just decided to step outside... and guess what?! We couldn’t believe it! We looked up and right in front of us was the Southern Lights in all its glory! It was such an amazing surprise, totally mind-blowing. We were in complete shock!
It was honestly amazing, and now I totally get why people say you have to see the Northern Lights at least once in your lifetime. Watching them dance across the sky right in front of us was just unreal. The sky was this incredible mix of pinkish-purple and vibrant greens, it felt like something out of a movie. The whole scene was so surreal, like the night itself was alive, moving with color and light. We just stood there in complete awe, completely blown away by how beautiful and otherworldly it all was.
It’s one of those moments you never forget, and I feel so lucky to have seen it firsthand.
Thank you, New Zealand, for helping us check off one of the biggest items on our bucket list! Seeing the Southern Lights was something we never imagined would actually happen, and it felt so special to experience it here. Definitely one of those unforgettable moments that makes the whole trip worth it!
Day 5: Queenstown - Arrowtown - Cromwell - Wanaka
It felt amazing to wake up early in the campervan, surrounded by nature. The fresh air was so refreshing as I stepped outside and saw the beautiful view; hills, mist, and the soft light from the rising sun. It was such a peaceful way to start the day, with just the sounds of birds and the breeze. Being in such a quiet, beautiful place made everything feel calm and relaxing.
We had McDonald's for breakfast before we left Queenstown. I was surprised to see the McDonald's signature in green, does anyone know the story behind it? I missed the bagels from McDonald's when I stayed in the USA, so I ordered one here, but I was very disappointed because it didn't taste as good as I expected.
And then we stocked up our small fridge once again before leaving Queenstown. I really enjoyed grocery shopping here because you can get a lot of ingredients at very low prices, without having to convert them to Malaysian Ringgit. I love the variety of choices available, which allows us to make different kinds of dishes every day.
It was only a 30-minute drive from Queenstown to Arrowtown, a short and easy trip. Arrowtown is small, but it has a very British feel to it. The streets are full of old buildings, and the architecture looks like something from the past. The stone houses and little shops make the town feel cozy and relaxed. It almost felt like we had stepped into a piece of old England. With its quiet streets, beautiful trees, and charming cafes, Arrowtown was a lovely place to visit.
If I’m not mistaken, Arrowtown is famous for its vibrant fall colors, when the trees turn into shades of gold, orange, and red. During this time, the streets and parks are blanketed with a colorful layer of fallen leaves, creating a picturesque setting that attracts many visitors. Even though we visited towards the end of fall, I could still imagine how stunning it must be when the town is fully covered in the rich colors of autumn.
The entire street of Arrowtown is lined with a delightful mix of charming shops, from cozy bakeries and vintage stores to quaint bookstores, sweet shops, art galleries, jewelry boutiques, clothing stores, and even a pharmacy. Whether you're in the mood for something delicious, a unique souvenir, or simply a bit of window shopping, there’s something to discover around every corner.
The Remarkable Sweet Shop, famous for its wide variety of delicious, locally made sweets, including nostalgic candies, fudge, and chocolates. Known for its vintage charm, the shop offers a nostalgic experience for visitors of all ages. Its award-winning fudge is a standout, and the shop is a popular stop for unique New Zealand-themed gifts. With its friendly atmosphere and high-quality treats, it’s a must-visit for anyone with a sweet tooth.
I really love the vibe of Arrowtown, especially the cozy, creamy wooden shops. They give the town a cozy, welcoming feel that perfectly matches the natural beauty around it.
We grabbed a takeaway lunch from The Shed, a small stall run by an Asian lady that offers a variety of delicious burgers. Since we hadn't tried the local hoki fish yet, we each decided to try the Hoki Burger for NZ $11. We also added NZ $5 to upgrade to a set, which came with fries and a coke. For me, the hoki tasted almost identical to the fish and chips fish.
We love eating outside, even though the sun was so bright. Not sure about you, but I really enjoy feeling the sunshine on a cold day. There's something special about the sun being warm while the air is cool, it’s like the sun is giving you a cozy hug, making everything feel better.
Patagonia Gelato is a popular gelato chain in New Zealand, known for its creamy, handmade gelato made with local ingredients. They offer a range of flavors like Feijoa Sorbet, Manuka Honey, and classic choices like chocolate and vanilla. It has become a must-visit for many travelers in the South Island, especially for those exploring places like Queenstown and Wanaka, where its shops are often located in picturesque settings.
It’s a bit pricey for me when I looked at the menu—1 scoop is NZ $7, 2 scoops are NZ $10, and a cone with 1 scoop is NZ $9, or NZ $12 for 2 scoops. But still, each bite is bursting with rich, full-bodied flavor, letting you truly taste the quality of the ingredients. It’s the kind of gelato that’s both indulgent and refreshing, leaving you craving more with every scoop.
Glad that my parents love it too! Imagine having the gelato under the perfect sun with cool weather, such a relaxing experience. The warmth of the sun on your skin, the fresh air, and that creamy, flavorful gelato, it makes everything feel so peaceful and enjoyable. It's one of those simple moments that make you truly appreciate the little things.
Another must-visit highlight in Arrowtown is the Chinese Settlement, a fascinating historical site that offers a glimpse into the town's gold mining past. Back in the 1860s, Chinese immigrants played a key role in the gold rush, setting up a vibrant community in Arrowtown. Today, the settlement is preserved as a reminder of their hard work and resilience.
Walking through the settlement, you’ll find small, restored cottages that were once home to the Chinese miners. The narrow lanes and simple buildings give you a sense of the modest lifestyle they led. There’s also a small, peaceful cemetery where many of the early Chinese settlers were buried, adding to the historical significance of the area. It's a great place to learn more about the gold rush era, reflect on the history, and appreciate the contributions of the Chinese community to New Zealand's development. My dad really enjoyed this part of the trip.
It's beautiful, isn't? :)
After that, we headed to Cromwell, but our stop there was brief since most of the stores were closed by the time we arrived in the late afternoon. It was a bit disappointing, especially since we had hoped to explore the local fruit stores, which are known for their fresh produce. If you're planning to visit these markets, it's definitely best to go earlier in the day, as many close by the afternoon.
Since the shops were mostly closed, we decided to take a leisurely walk around Cromwell. As we strolled through the town, we admired the beautiful scenery, wide-open spaces framed by the stunning Central Otago landscape. It was a peaceful, relaxing moment with no rush, just soaking in the views and tranquility around us.
From Cromwell, it was just a 45-minute drive to our final destination, Wanaka, for the day.
We stayed at Wanaka Top 10 Holiday Park for two nights, which offered a great base to relax and explore the area.
I booked my parents and my niece into the Ensuite Studio Unit, which accommodates up to 3 people. The unit features a spacious layout with basic kitchen facilities, a dining setting, and one bathroom. The room was spacious, comfortable, and offered a convenient stay, and my parents really liked it. So, we ended up extending our stay for one more night in Wanaka at the last minute. It was just too good of a spot to leave so soon!
Me and Jia En, my niece, prepared a simple Asian dinner with ABC soup. We always crave soup at dinner time, especially when the weather is cold outside. Having a hot bowl of soup makes us feel warm and cozy, perfect for a chilly evening. It’s comforting and hearty, just what we needed to end the day.
There isn't much to do after 8pm in the area, so we usually just stay in the campervan and relax. Our evening routine often includes watching Netflix or listening to music. On clear nights, we also love stepping outside to gaze at the stars. With the sky so dark and clear, the stars look amazing, and it’s so peaceful just standing there, taking in the vastness of the night sky.
That wraps up Part 1 of my South Island New Zealand itinerary! I’ve shared everything from day 1, starting with our journey from Melbourne to Queenstown, settling into the campervan, and taking the scenic drive to Milford Sound, all the way through to day 5, where we explored Arrowtown and arrived in beautiful Wanaka. I hope you've enjoyed hearing about the journey so far!

Part 2 is on its way, and its going to be even more exciting! I'll be covering the stunning Mt Cook, without a doubt the most beautiful scenery I've ever seen, as well as the breathtaking Lake Tekapo. I hope you'll join me for part 2 of this epic campervan road trip across New Zealand!
