Top 5 Things to Do in Richmond, Virginia

A few weeks ago, I met up with Leena, an old friend from the USA. We've known each other for more than 20 years, and when I studied in Michigan, I always liked to spend my summer holiday at Leena's place in Minnesota. Now, we usually meet every two years, when she visits Malaysia for her summer holiday.

It's been really nice to see her again and catch up on everything. We shared a lot of old memories about the USA, like the crazy things we did together and the fun we had on our road trip to LA. What an amazing adventure we had!

Leena knows I've missed a lot of things about the USA, so she suggested that I plan a holiday to the USA with my parents next year. She lives in North Dakota, so when I visit, I can also take a trip to see Mount Rushmore, a famous attraction in South Dakota. I can also take my parents to visit some other places, like Minnesota, Wisconsin, Indiana, Michigan, and Richmond, Virginia. Richmond is the state capital and one of the oldest major cities in America. Here's what I would do in Richmond.

#1: Graffiti and Street Art

I really love graffiti and street art. It makes old buildings look beautiful and colorful, and it also makes for amazing street photography. Richmond has a great district where locals and international artists have painted all of the walls. With over 100 murals, this district has become a favourite destination for street art enthusiasts.

#2: The Valentine

I also want to experience Richmond's history at The Valentine, which is located downtown. This museum has attracted many residents and tourists, as this place has collected, preserved, and interpreted Richmond's 400-year history for over a century.

#3: Eat Donuts at Sugar Shack Donuts

I am a donut fan, and in Richmond, I have to go to Sugar Shack Donuts! Some sites say that Sugar Shack Donuts can satisfy anyone and everyone because of the wide variety of toppings. Sugar Shack Donuts also has a mobile truck that delivers gluten-free and vegan donuts to shops around Richmond.

#4: Richmond Beer Trail

Say "hello" to Richmond's craft beer! Richmond is a major craft beer destination with more than 20 breweries. The Wall Street Journal also says Richmond is home to one of the region's fastest-growing beer scenes. As a beer lover, I couldn't leave out the Richmond Beer Trail!

#5: The James River

I'm going to have my first kayak experience in the James River! It's Richmond's greatest natural resource with many outdoor activities nearby, such as biking, rafting, hiking, running, and climbing. From here, you can see a great city view of Richmond, too.

Where to Stay in Richmond
Now, where should we stay in Richmond, Virginia? Hotels aren't very expensive here, even the famous international luxury hotel brands. Here are some of the best picks from HotelPlanner.

Graduate Richmond

The Graduate Richmond is a new hotel that just opened last month, so I'm sure it's neat and clean. Room rates start from $94 with either one king or two double beds. The rooms look so comfy and modern, and I like that the Graduate Richmond encourages guests to go green by reusing their towels and linens.

Crowne Plaza Richmond Downtown

The Crowne Plaza Richmond Downtown has a convenient location just a 20-minute walk to the Valentine Museum and some street art. It looks like a big hotel, as it has an indoor swimming pool and gym facilities. Though the interior and furniture look a bit old-fashioned, the rooms look decent and clean. The basic room rate is about $109, with a 4.0 rating from 881 guest reviews.

Linden Row Inn

I love the French-style backyard at the Linden Row Inn! The entire building has a European style to welcome guests. The room rate is reasonable, starting at $90 per night. If you look at traveler reviews, this inn has a 4.5 from 1,019 guest reviews.

I took this picture with Leena 13 years ago in Duluth, Minnesota. Time passes, and people change. Look at the outfits and makeup we wore back then. Let's keep our fingers crossed that our next gathering happens soon in the USA!

5 Things I Would Like To Do in Phoenix, Arizona @ USA

My mum has always wanted to visit USA again, ever since she was there 10 years ago. She missed the country very much. She always told her friends that the trip to America was the best of all. The country has great weather, nice people, good food, and crazy shopping. That's what her impression of this country.
I really wish sooner or later I can take some time off to make my mum's dream comes true. Travelling to the USA isn't very easy though. I would need to take long holiday from work, at least a month, as I don't think I want to visit for just a week after taking a long flight. Also, the current exchange rate make it even more expensive to travel to the USA now.
Anyway, while I was talking to my mum about the USA, she said she is interested in starting a trip in Los Angeles, and planning a road trip to Las Vegas with stops in Phoenix and at the Grand Canyon.
Las Vegas is my second favourite city in the USA, after San Francisco. I also like Grand Canyon, as it's one of the most extraordinary places to go for vacation.

Here are some pictures I took in Las Vegas and Grand Canyon 10 years back. I wonder how much the places have changed since then? All these pictures recall the fun memories I had in America. They also make me miss America so much!
If I had the chance to travel to the Grand Canyon again, I would probably join the helicopter tour. I believe the view would be stunning! And for Las Vegas, I would definitely want to take a picture with the "Welcome to fabulous Las Vegas Sign" because I think I missed that out in my previous trip. Since I've never been to Phoenix, Arizona before, I've researched some of the best places to visit.

#1 Camelback Mountain

The main reason I want to visit Camelback Mountain is because it's the highest peak in Phoenix. From here, you can see incredible scenery. Hiking to the summit probably isn't suitable for my mum, but I think she wouldn't mind walking at the base of the mountain and taking some nice pictures. The entrance is free of charge, and we can visit there any time in the morning before sunrise or in the evening for sunset.

#2 Papago Park (Hole in the Rock)

There are many museums in Phoenix, but since I'm not really a museum person, so I'll skip them all. The second attraction that I would like to visit is the Papago Park. Since it's located only 10 minutes from downtown Phoenix, it's best for us to go here for exercise in the morning before breakfast.
The main reason I want to visit Papago Park is to see the Hole in the Rock. I saw a picture of this spot while searching for places to visit around Phoenix. People said it isn't difficult to climb up to the rock and the view of the rock is worth it, so I think we'll enjoy it.

#3 Desert Botanical Garden

I've loved cactus since I was a kid, maybe because they don't need special care like other plants. Review of the Desert Botanical Garden say there are different kind of cacti from all around the world
here, so I'm very interested in paying a visit. I'm sure the variety of cacti will be amazing to see in person! Besides, I think it would be a great place for photography.

#4 Mexican Food

Phoenix is famous for Mexican food, and this is one of the must-eat cuisines in Phoenix. Tortillas, refried beans, tacos, and burritos, are some of the best foods from Mexico. I used to eat a lot of tacos and burritos when I was studying in Michigan.
In Malaysia, there aren't any good Mexican restaurants I can think of, and a decent one is quite costly. I am sure this would be a great chance to recall my memories of the States.

#5 Phoenix Premium Outlet

Last but not least, I don't think we can leave Phoenix without doing any shopping. Everyone knows that premium outlets in the USA are the best places to shop. I remember the first time I brought my mum to the outlet in Chicago. She almost got the whole outlet back home!
The Phoenix Premium Outlet have all the famous brands such as Gap, Guess, DKNY, Michael Kors, Nike, Adidas, Old Navy, Tommy Hilfiger, Polo, and many more. It's been a while since I shopped crazily, so I definitely can't wait to shop and get the best deals at the outlets again!

Where to Stay in Phoenix

So, where would we stay in Phoenix? I always think good value is the most important factor when it comes to accommodations.
I just stumbled upon HotelPlanner while searching the places in Phoenix, Arizona. This site has great deals for hotels in Phoenix, such as the Renaissance Phoenix Downtown, the Sheraton Grand Phoenix, the Holiday Inn, and the Hilton Phoenix Suites. All these cost less than $100 per night. I think these probably would be our best choice, since they are near downtown and all the attractions.

I think by now you can imagine how much I miss America! It's so big, and there are still many parts of the country I have yet to visit and explore.
I hope you enjoyed reading this long article, and hopefully it gives you some ideas about America, especially the places to go, and where to find good accommodations in the States. Lastly, finger crossed that I don't need to wait too long to fulfill my USA dream!

Boutique Hotels in the US Hollywood

I have a few friends were asking me about my LA trip after they read my travel post during our last week gathering.
If you haven't read it, you can click the direct link at here. :)
They said LA looks fun and nice to visit and they want me to suggest where to stay if they are planning to go there.
So, after I went through some websites and here I decided to make a post for them and whoever travels to LA soon.

Hotels in LA are not cheap at all, especially if you want to stay in the downtown areas.
When I was travelling in the States last time, my friends and I usually went for the motels or boutique hotels instead of the big hotels since they have good rooms and services but with better rates.

Motel 6 Hollywood

The main reason for choosing the Motel 6 Hollywood is because of it's location
You'll find it just 0.4 miles from the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
It's one of the budget hotel in the downtown area and provides all basic features such as Wi-fi, flat panel screen TV with expanded cable, complimentary morning coffee, mini-refrigerator, and so on.
You can book the room from Hipmunk for an average of US$50 to US$100.

W Hollywood

W Hollywood has expensive rooms that cost anywhere from US$250 to US$500 per night.
The rooms are costly because they not only provide flat screen TVs, but also DVD players, snacks boxes, minibars, marble bathrooms, and work desks.
For a relaxing trip, You may consider this hotel as you can kickstart your morning engine warm up at their 24 hours fitness center, then enjoy a nice lunch with their different dining options, and end your night with a cocktail at the rooftop poolside bar.

Loews Hollywood Hotel

Loews Hollywood Hotel is thone I love the most, not only because it is close to the Hollywood Walk of Fame and the TCL Chinese Theatre, but also because the rooms furnishings armodern and classic.
Besides, the hotel also provides an outdoor pool, fitness center and spa; you can also ask for the room with the views of the LA Skyline too.
Their rooms and suites aravailable for between US$250 to US$600 per night.

Magic Castle Hotel

Magic Castle Hotel is a mid-priced hotel which charges between US$150 and US$300 per night.
The room provides not only full kitchens, coffee/tea makers, and refrigerators in their suites, but visitors can also enjoy the large pool, and loungers are located poolside for afternoon sunbathing.

The Redbury @ Hollywood and Vine

If you like something fancy and vintage styling, you may consider the Redbury @ Hollywood and Vine.
It's a fabulous boutique hotel in the heart of downtown which provides all the sambasic amenities like the above hotels.
Moreover, the hotel also has the stylish indoor and outdoor cocktail lounge and fitness center.
Hipmunk has a good averagrate with this hotel at US$250 per night.

A good vacation is not about staying in the luxury hotels or taking the fabulous airlines, but enjoying the unique local experiences.
Plan your trip early to get better rates for your accommodation and flight, and who knows? Maybe you'll score a fantastic deal.
